Phlebotomy Technology



A phlebotomist is a professionally trained and certified person who works in a hospital, clinical laboratory, or health-care facility and obtains blood specimens from patients using a variety of intrusive procedures. In addition to technical, clerical, and interpersonal skills, the phlebotomist must develop strong organizational skills to handle a heavy workload efficiently and accurately.


Major duties and responsibilities of the phlebotomist include:

Correct I.D. of the patient before collecting samples

Collection of the appropriate amount of blood by Venipuncture or skin puncture

Selection of the appropriate specimen containers

Correct labeling of all specimens

Appropriate transportation of specimens to the laboratory Effective interaction with patients and other personnel in the workplace.

Southern Technical Institute's Phlebotomy Technician diploma program prepares individuals, under the supervision of nurses, phlebotomists and other health care professionals, to draw blood samples from patients using a variety of intrusive procedures. Phlebotomy Technician classes also teach you to collect and process other clinical specimens.

Upon completion of this program, you receive a diploma and will be prepared to take your national certification exam.

At the completion of the course you will be able to:

Demonstrate accepted professional, communication and interpersonal skills.

Discuss phlebotomy in relation to the health care setting

Identify the anatomic structure and function of body systems in relation to services performed by phlebotomists.

Recognize and identify collection reagents supplies, equipment and interfering chemical substances.

Demonstrate skills and knowledge necessary to perform phlebotomy.

Practice infection control following universal (standard) precautions.

Practice accepted procedures of transporting, accessioning and processing specimens.

Practice quality assurance and safety.
